Why Is Constantine On Sandman Pronounced Differently?

The Sandman series has been adapted into a Netflix series, and the controversy around its alterations cannot be ignored. From John Constatine being turned into a female character to the last name being pronounced differently, fans have several questions for the creators.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s 1989–1996 comic book of the same name, published by DC Comics, The Sandman is an American fantasy drama television series. Premiered on August 5, it generally garnered favorable reviews from critics who praised the casting, production design, costuming, visual effects, fidelity to the original material, and performances, particularly those of Sturridge and David Thewlis.

Why Is Constantine On Sandman Pronounced Differently?

Even if you look at it roughly, Constantine has two pronunciations. The Americans voice it as ‘Con-stan-TEEN,’ whereas Britishers call it ‘Con-stan-TYNE.’ The screenrant says that the correct way of it is the latter. Hence, for the Netflix global audience, the makers opted widely accepted one.

When Keanu Reeves portrayed the character back in 2005, it was pronounced, ‘Con-stan-TEEN.’ Fair enough, because he played the North American version of the particular man. The same pronunciation continued for Matt Ryan as well. He even corrects the person who calls him Constantine with TYNE. The audience then completely bought it and could never think of pronouncing it the other way.

However, with many modifications in the character, we even come across other changes like this. Twitter has a lot to say about this, and the discussion by far seems healthy.

The Comic Character For Constantine Was Not A Woman

Jenna Coleman of Doctor Who portrays the character, which is actually based on the Hellblazer series’ warlock John Constantine from DC Comics. Viewers may be familiar with the name from the NBC television series Constantine from 2014, starring Matt Ryan, or from the 2005 movie Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves.

The Sandman comics feature both John and Johanna Constantine early on, but only Johanna is seen in the Netflix series. Additionally, Johanna is supposed to be John’s ancestor from the 18th century, but Netflix’s Sandman took a different approach by casting Coleman as both Johanna and her identical descendant in the present day.

This move is taken as quite risky, and fans have different opinions on this. One of the Twitteratti says, “I’m not bothered by this type of change, the only thing here a bit because Constantine’s grace is that he is the typical white British, arrogant and that if you met in real life, you might even dislike him Even so if they choose him, we will have to wait to see his performance to judge well.”

John Constantine’s character rights are upheld elsewhere. Thus, Johanna Constantine takes John’s place in The Sandman. John Constantine is set to appear in a Justice League Dark TV project being developed by HBO Max and JJ Abrams’s Bad Robot production company.

Matt Ryan played the character on NBC and The CW from 2015 to 2021, and it was a hugely successful run. In The Sandman’s present-day tale, Gaiman and executive producer Allan Heinberg merely replaced John with Johanna Constantine; nevertheless, intriguingly, Jenna Coleman also portrays Lady Johanna Constantine in The Sandman episodes set in the 18th century.

Don’t anticipate any future appearances of John Constantine because Johanna has already been identified in Netflix’s The Sandman as the character.
