Malcolm Kerr is most known as the father of Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr, who was shot twice in the head by members of a violent Islamic group on January 18, 1984.
The Golden State Warriors coach is stunned by a horrific massacre that took place at a primary school in Uvalde, Texas, and took the lives of 19 pupils and two adults.
Kerr was upset for a variety of reasons, one of which was that he had experienced a similar tragedy himself. His family’s past is tainted by a similar heinous shooting, so he’s wary of such situations.
While serving as Rector of the American University of Beirut, his father, Malcolm, was assassinated on January 18, 1984. He was shot twice in the head by members of a violent Islamic group. In the famous documentary “The Last Dance,” Steve Kerr described how he learned of his father’s murder.

Steve Kerr Father Was Shot to Death in Lebanon Assassination
Malcolm Kerr was the president of the American University of Beirut and a university professor specializing in Middle Eastern and Arab studies. It was the middle of the Lebanese Civil War when he started serving in the latter post in 1982. It was particularly dangerous to be an American citizen residing there at the time, as evidenced by two consecutive bombs at the nearby US Embassy.
Unfortunately, Kerr was shot and killed outside his office by two gunmen on January 18, 1984, signaling yet another probable attack on the US in Lebanon. His death was such a big deal that it even elicited a statement from Ronald Reagan, the president of the United States at the time.
Furthermore, Steve was a college freshman at the time of his father’s death, and he was just 18 years old. “Bad things happen to other people,” he said of his father’s death. The Kerr family filed a lawsuit against the Iranian government under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Acts of 1996.
