He was best known for his role as Tarzan in the 1930s and 1940s films Tarzan and the Lost Ark and for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the twentieth century. Johnny Weissmuller (born Peter Johann Weissmüller; June 2, 1904 – January 20, 1984) was an Austro-Hungarian-American competition swimmer and actor. When he was a child, Weissmuller was regarded as one of the world’s best swimmers, earning five gold medals at the Olympics for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo in the 1920s. He won 52 US National Championships and established 67 world records throughout his competitive career, and he was reportedly unbeaten in official competition for the whole of his competitive career. Following his swimming career, he went on to become the sixth actor to portray Edgar Rice Burroughs’ ape man, Tarzan, a character he went on to perform in a total of twelve films. There have been dozens of other performers who have portrayed Tarzan, but Weissmuller is by far the most well-known of them. The Tarzan scream that he created for his character is still often heard in films today.
